Training Your Dog

                by Jim McNelis

This sort of problem is sometimes common in smaller dogs.  Dogs
hardly ever soil their crate since they consider this their home
when they are confined in this small space.  For smaller dogs,
the run of the house is a *very large* space, and they may think
that they can go behind a couch or some other area since the
house is so huge.

First, when you let your dog out, I suggest using a phrase like
"hurry-up"  Repeat this many times.  When she does her business,
say, "good girl, hurry up is good...what a good girl".  When
she is finished immediately bring her back in the house.  If you
repeat this same phrase every time, they begin to know the words
and what it means -- this becomes very handy when you are in
unfamiliar places.  Remember, PRAISE -- then IMMEDIATELY back
inside the house.  Separate play from business so she understands
what you want her to do.  You can take her out later to play.

Second, if she does not do her business when you know she should,
return her to her crate.  She will not want to soil her crate,
so she should start to bark or otherwise communicate with you
that she needs to go.  Take her back outside and tell her to
"hurry-up".  If she goes, PRAISE PRAISE PRAISE, then let her
back in and give her the run of the house.  If not, return her
to her crate.

Continue doing this, then in the future, if she does not go,
instead of returning her to her crate, leave her confined to
say the bedroom where the crate is kept (door shut).  This is
a larger territory than the crate, but smaller than the entire
house. You should be able to work her up to the entire house
by gradually giving her more.  If at any time she fails, then
go back one step.

The "hurry-up" phrase is really worth the work.  When it's time
to go to bed at night, I open the door and let my dogs out and
tell them to "hurry-up".  As soon as they are done, they come
running back -- no dilly dally.

Hope this helps,
-Jim
